Many neurological diseases are reflected in eyes.

  • Non arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy is the commonest problem between 55-70 years.
  • Seen associated with Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, carotid artery diseases, hyperlipidemia, cerebrovasculoar disease, migraine, after cataract surgery, hypotension etc. -Inflammation swelling and hemorrhage, infection or Tumors etc. of various parts of brain can show changes in the eye.
  • Various infections like tapeworm, fungi like Mucormycosis and aspergillus, viruses TB etc. can present in different ways.
  • Aneurysms, occlusions of vessels in the brain hemorrhages etc can manifest as headache, squint, stroke etc.


Very often the ophthalmologist sees the patient first. So a thorough eye checkup including dilated fundus examination, central fields, colour vision, VEP etc. has to be done. Prompt referral to neurologist for CT, MRI and treatment is vital.
